So after an unpardonable delay, here I am with my list of favorite songs of 2014. Thank god I put it up on my blog before 2015 ended. If we look at entire albums, here are my favorite albums. These are albums whose all songs I love – 1.        Highway – This is vintage Rahman. Plus there is Imtiaz Ali to give you breathtaking Himachal along with the songs. 2.        Happy ending – Raj and Dk always manage to extract the best out of Sachin – Jigar. There is an unusual addictiveness in this album which makes it un-put-downable. Very versatile album. 3.        Queen – This is Amit Trivedi at his very best. Once again a very creative and lovely album. The best part of the album was it complemented the film very well. The songs fitted well in the film, never seeming forced or unnecessary. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is synonymous with fantastic music. Rang De Basanti and then Delhi 6 were massive blockbusters. This time however Mehra opts for Shankar Ehsaan and Loy instead of A.R Rahman. Let us see what the trio presents to us. Mehra is known for including a short musical/lyrical piece in the soundtracks of his movies. First there was “Ik Onkar” in RDB and then there was “NOOR” in Delhi 6. Here we have “GURBAANI” – a lovely short prayer like piece sung by Daler Mehndi. And boy, Daler paaji rocks. I have always held the opinion that both Daler and his brother Mika sing such songs very well. It is a pity that we get to hear them most often in Punjabi dance numbers. Gurbaani’s short duration of 1.40 minutes is enough to showcase Daler mehndi’s scale range of singing. He is simply brilliant. But the winner is the fab arrangement by the composer trio. It has happened only once in the last eleven years that a movie by “Excel entertainment” has had a full soundtrack by someone other than Shankar – Ehsan – Loy (Unless You count the guest compositions by medival punditz in Don and Karthik calling Karthik). And it was for the film “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.” whose music was by Vishal – Shekhar. Now it happens a second time that someone else replaces the regular trio for Excel, and it is Ram Sampath. Coincidentally both these movies have been directed by Reema Kagti. “MUSKAANEIN JHOOTHI HAIN” is a typical thriller song. With slow beats and a superb tune, it is the sultry voice of Suman Sridhar which makes this song sheer brilliance. Everything about the song reminds us of those thrillers of the 1980’s. And with a video featuring Kareena Kapoor “Khan” (And her extra bright lipstick), this song is sure to become a sure shot hit. There is something very addictive about it. Zara dil ko thaam lo, because the king is back.. After one of the slickest action flicks bollywood has ever witnessed in the form of don, farhan akhtar is back wit DON 2. As always, the very dependable trio shankar-ehsaan-loy are behind the helm of affairs in the music department. But do they deliver yet again? Let's see. Before any singers step in, SRK himself starts the album with one of his dialogues from the movie. What a novel way to begin the audio track of a sequel. Classy! Anusha mani and vishal dadlani deliver ZARA DIL KO THAAM LO perfectly. While anusha's haunting vocals go perfectly in sync with the mood of the song, it is the sinister-sounding vishal who aces the track. This song is tailor-made for the guy. If there's anyone who is making vishal deliver hit after hit, it is not vishal shekhar. It is S-E-L.
