“English Vinglish” was a lovely film. Infact, it was one of the finest films to have come out in recent years from Bollywood. Debutantè director Gauri Shinde managed to tug all the right emotional chords with a gem of a movie. So in a way it is not incorrect to have huge expectations from her second directorial outing, especially with a stellar leading cast. Also, since the different “TAKES” of the movie have started coming out, there is a lot of freshness and positive vibe in all of them. Be it the camaraderie between Alia Bhatt and SRK or the lovely music, everything about this movie seems right. Rohit Shetty’s movies never boast of path breaking music. However, this time he teams up with Shahrukh Khan. Let us see what Vishal and Shekhar give us in the music department. 1234 – GET ON THE DANCE FLOOR – Staying true to the title of the film, the song starts with some tamil rendition by Hamsika Iyer. We are also treated to some tamil rap portions done by Sricharan. To put it bluntly, the song is highly irritating. Following the path taken by umpteen item songs, this one too progresses on the same lines. With a catchy background beat, we are treated to Amitabh Bhattacharya’s disappointing lyrics. (Is it really him?) Vishal Dadlani sings one of his career’s worst songs. He is totally out of tune and doesn’t fit in at all in the song. Even the video hardly does any justice to the song. There are people who hate him. There are people who love him. And there are people who are crazy after him. My affection for him has always been variegating. While I have loved some of his performances, I don’t like certain avatars of him. One big problem I have had with Shahrukh khan’s acting is the times he hams on screen – you know when he is crying and gives that typical facial expression – which is totally a turn off. Whenever he has steered clear from doing that on screen, he has given some brilliant performances.   He is a fantastic actor, no doubt, and over the years, I have fallen in love with some of the characters he has played. “CHALLA”: Okay a lot has been said about this song and most of it is true. This one is more of rabbi and less of Rahman and almost nil of Gulzar. And Shahrukh khan with a guitar doesn’t help it either. But it is hell catchy a tune – no doubt about that. Right from the opening guitar portions which are superb (falsely alleged by some to be a rip off), this one will be loved by rabbi fans. He sings in his customary style with a bit of besuraapan at places which is now being accepted without much ado (Just as in the case of Atif aslam). Rahman does make sure he puts his customary styled music in between, like that yuvvraaj – ish chorus before the 2 nd antara. Overall it did take quite a few listenings but now I like this one. Definitely not brilliant, but good nonetheless. “JIYA RE”: Six years, Rahman roped in the group VIVA to sing a song in the film “Lakeer”. Now he gets Aasma girl Neeti mohan to croon this one.
