It is a golden period for the gujarati film industry. Yes I prefer to call it that instead of the horrible names “DHOLLYWOOD” and “GOLLYWOOD”. Is it mandatory to copy everything from the United States? Coming back, the Gujarati film industry is witnessing a phase like never before. It all started with the “Chetan Bhagat of the Gujarati Film industry”, i.e Abhishek Jain. His 2 films opened a door of vast opportunities and soon everyone followed suit. The latest offering is Kirtan Patel’s “Bas Ek Chance”. Now this is a special film because apart from it being a gujarati film, it is also the first mainstream film to be almost entirely shot in my city Vadodara. Nikhil Advani is one of those rare directors whose films have always boasted of brilliant music – Kal ho na ho, Salaam-e-ishq, and the recent Patiala House. Even Chandni Chowk to China had the gorgeous “Tere naina”. In short, his movies have always had quality chartbuster stuff. Tanu weds Manu was a very special film – the earthiness of the movie, the lead actors’ very natural acting and most importantly the music. What an album it was – wedding song, a romantic song, a semi classical song, and that piece of awesomeness which we know today as “RANGREZZ”. This film intrigued me from the moment I saw its first promo. I still remember the facebook contest regarding the film’s music. Since then I had been waiting expectantly for the music. And since the tracklist released few days back, the anticipation has only grown further. I made it a point not to listen to the single track released few days back, because I wanted to hear the full album at once. And finally it is there. “AAYATEIN” is the same mesmerizing aalaap which appeared in the film’s trailer. Sung by the Malyalam reality show winner Najim Arshad, this one is pure divinity. Najim Arshad’s voice is superb. But when one was a full fledged long aalaap, the song gets over! With a running time of just 54 seconds, this one mesmerizes you during every single second. How I wish it would have been longer. “SAWAALON KI GOD MEIN” finally showcases Najim Arshad’s immensely soulful voice to the fullest. “CHALLA”: Okay a lot has been said about this song and most of it is true. This one is more of rabbi and less of Rahman and almost nil of Gulzar. And Shahrukh khan with a guitar doesn’t help it either. But it is hell catchy a tune – no doubt about that. Right from the opening guitar portions which are superb (falsely alleged by some to be a rip off), this one will be loved by rabbi fans. He sings in his customary style with a bit of besuraapan at places which is now being accepted without much ado (Just as in the case of Atif aslam). Rahman does make sure he puts his customary styled music in between, like that yuvvraaj – ish chorus before the 2 nd antara. Overall it did take quite a few listenings but now I like this one. Definitely not brilliant, but good nonetheless. “JIYA RE”: Six years, Rahman roped in the group VIVA to sing a song in the film “Lakeer”. Now he gets Aasma girl Neeti mohan to croon this one.
