Inspite of the bubbly trailer, one isn’t quite sure what exactly to expect from the soundtrack of Gippi. But hopes are sufficiently high because the music has been done by Vishal – Shekhar, who have an impressive record with Karan Johar (Dostana, I hate Luv Storys). “WE ARE LIKE THIS ONLY” is a literal translation of the common hindi line “Hum toh aise hai bhaiyya”. With lyrics by Vishal Dadlani, this song has “Vishal Shekhar” written all over it. The song begins with a rather intriguing instrumental loop. What follows next is some rap by Hard Kaur mingled with Vishal’s singing. As I said, standard typical song from Vishal Shekhar. Nothing great, but catchy, peppy and foot tapping. “PEHN DI TAKKI” is even more typical. A tune which gives the feeling of “I have heard something like this before”, Vishal sings this one nicely. There are few movies which have a soundtrack as an aide to the script. While there are few movies which heavily rely on the soundtrack. The most recent example of this is “ROCKSTAR” – a film which needed an extraordinary soundtrack, and that is just what Rahman gave. Touted as India’s first dance film, director Remo D’souza goes a step further to make it in 3D. He also ropes in some of the country’s finest choreographers and dancers. And finally to make sure that there is someone who can act, we have Kay Kay Menon. And then there is Prabhudeva. Now this movie needs a great soundtrack – something which can provide ample opportunity for these dancers to show off their skills on screen, and at the same time sound good to the ears. Vishal shekhar have had a phenomenal year so far. Kahaani and shanghai both boasted of a mind blowing soundtrack. It was a pity that most of the songs were not included in the movies. One looks forward to see what the duo compose for karan johar’s movie. With three totally new actors and a “typical karan johar first trailer”, it remains to be seen what the music will be like. “DISCO DEEWANE” or “THE DISCO SONG” : Vishal shekhar take up the very famous song of the yesteryears and make it into a new song, adding a newer tune, some beats and retaining the “disco deewane” loop. To be frank, when I first heard it, I didn’t like it at all. Compared to the original one by nazia hassan, this one fell flat. But after repeated hearings, I feel it is not that bad. “KAAFIRANA” is composed by guest composer Gaurav Dagaonkar (of the song College Days fame) who recently composed a song or two in vikram bhatt’s film “Lanka”. It is disgusting as to what heights the makers of this film are going to promote this song. The entire controversy about FAKHT and JUST is irritating and pointless. Coming back to the song, I expected something out of this world as it had “ THE” Chitrangada featuring in it. But the song is a big disappointment. It has nothing new to offer, only adding itself to the countless boring item songs this year. But if you consider silly beats and a beaten-to-death-tune as a rocking song, then you will like it. For me, I’d grudgingly listen to it only because the accompanying video features chitrangada. However, I’d prefer ALIVA and TAJ MAHAL CHAI ( maan gaye saif ) to this song anyday.
