After "Ajab prem ki ghazab kahaani", the team of Rajkumar Santoshi and Pritam return with PPNH. While the former had some great music, I somehow listen to this soundtrack with slightly reduced expectations- blame it on the slapstick trailer, its similarity to APKGK or the absence of Ranbir Kapoor. Let us take a look at the soundtrack. "AGAL BAGAL" sees Mika in full form. Having mastered such songs, this one rises one step further owing to a catchy tune, very funny lyrics and an innovative video. There is also some nice use of harmonium(?), guitar and some really good interludes between the antaras. Massy, entertaining and catchy, this one is sure to set your feet tapping. "HEY MR DJ" is sung by Benny Dayal, Shefali Alvares and Shalmali Kholgade. Included as a pure club number, this one has a heavy hangover of "Latt lag gayi" from Race 2. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is an album and movie I am eagerly looking forward to. Firstly it is directed by Ayan Mukerjee whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and spending some time with before his debut movie released, and secondly because his first movie “Wake up Sid” is one of my all time favorite movies. This time instead of SEL and Amit Trivedi, he ropes in Pritam to compose the music. “BADTAMEEZ DIL” is instant chartbuster material. Right from the immensely catchy tune to the superb singing by Benny Dayal and Shefali Alvaris, the song will appeal instantly. The USP however is the fabulous lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. They are hilarious, innovative and deserve applause. Notice how he intelligently uses the phrase “Gilli Gilli Akkha” from the old song “Yeh Jawaani hai deewani”. This film intrigued me from the moment I saw its first promo. I still remember the facebook contest regarding the film’s music. Since then I had been waiting expectantly for the music. And since the tracklist released few days back, the anticipation has only grown further. I made it a point not to listen to the single track released few days back, because I wanted to hear the full album at once. And finally it is there. “AAYATEIN” is the same mesmerizing aalaap which appeared in the film’s trailer. Sung by the Malyalam reality show winner Najim Arshad, this one is pure divinity. Najim Arshad’s voice is superb. But when one was a full fledged long aalaap, the song gets over! With a running time of just 54 seconds, this one mesmerizes you during every single second. How I wish it would have been longer. “SAWAALON KI GOD MEIN” finally showcases Najim Arshad’s immensely soulful voice to the fullest. Let us take a look at amit trivedi’s works this year. In the beginning of 2012, he composes a peppy album for Dharma productions. Few months later, he composes another beauty for the yashraj banner. (Read my music review of ishaqzaade HERE ) He is a gujarati mind you. And yet he composed a fantastic score for English Vinglish with a lovely Marathi wedding song. (Read my music review HERE ) As if that wasn’t enough, he composed a parody by the name of Aiyyaa where again he tried his hands at Marathi (Lavni) and even south Indian music. The results were fairly engaging and highly innovative. And now he goes PUNJABI for “Luv shuv tey chicken khurana”. PHEW! So many diverse languages and he still gives something different everytime. “CHALLA”: Okay a lot has been said about this song and most of it is true. This one is more of rabbi and less of Rahman and almost nil of Gulzar. And Shahrukh khan with a guitar doesn’t help it either. But it is hell catchy a tune – no doubt about that. Right from the opening guitar portions which are superb (falsely alleged by some to be a rip off), this one will be loved by rabbi fans. He sings in his customary style with a bit of besuraapan at places which is now being accepted without much ado (Just as in the case of Atif aslam). Rahman does make sure he puts his customary styled music in between, like that yuvvraaj – ish chorus before the 2 nd antara. Overall it did take quite a few listenings but now I like this one. Definitely not brilliant, but good nonetheless. “JIYA RE”: Six years, Rahman roped in the group VIVA to sing a song in the film “Lakeer”. Now he gets Aasma girl Neeti mohan to croon this one.
