MY TOP SONGS FROM FILMS/WEB SERIES

Owing to the lockdown, a lot of stuff which was supposed to release in the theatres released on OTT platforms. Hence, I will be considering all movies and web series released in the year 2020.

The best composers this year were undoubtedly Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy followed closely by A.R Rahman & Pritam.

While the former had Chhalaang, Panga and the outstanding Bandish Bandits, Rahman had 2 humongous albums – 99  Songs & Dil Bechara. Pritam too gave 2 excellent albums – Love Aaj Kal & Ludo.

Below is my list of the top 30 songs of this year. Apart from the first Ten songs, the rest aren't arranged in any particular order of liking.

1.     GARAJ GARAJ JUGALBANDI (BANDISH BANDITS)

Singers : Farid Hassan & Mohammed Aman

Composers : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist : Sameer Samant

Undoubtedly the best song of the year for me. It not only evokes goosebumps but also tears every single time I listen to it, especially during the end.

2.     HARDUM HUMDUM (LUDO)

Singers : Arijit Singh & Shilpa Rao (Different versions)

Composer : Pritam

Lyricist : Sayeed Quadri

A semi-ghazalish tune with a beautiful melody and some lovely singing by both the singers in their respective versions.

3.     MAIN TUMHARA (DIL BECHARA)

Singers : Jonita Gandhi & Hriday Gattani

Composer : A.R Rahman

Lyricist : Amitabh Bhattacharya

A song which has so minimal background instruments, this one is a gem. Only Rahman can compose a song which is so beautiful in itself that it doesn’t need to rely on assisting background instruments.

4.     VIRAH (BANDISH BANDITS)

Singer : Shankar Mahadevan

Composers : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist : Sameer Samant

5.     DIL NE DIL KI SUDHLI HAIN (PATI PATNI AUR  PANGA)

Singer : Lagnajita Chakraborty

Composer : Ranajoy Bhattarjee

Lyricist : Vishwadeep Zeest

One of my personal favorites, this is a highly underrated and unknown gem. The reason is the lack of support from Mxplayer – the platform simply refuses to release the songs from its web series separately.

I highly recommend everyone to listen to this beautifully composed, sung and written song. I am yet to find a single platform where an official and good quality audio version is available. Pretty shameful on part of Mx Player, I must say.

6.     GORI GODH BHARI (99 SONGS)

Singers : Anuradha Sriram, Alka Yagnik & Shweta Mohan

Composer : A.R Rahman

Lyricist : Navneet Virk

Trust ARR to extract the best out of Alka Yagnik in the last few years. This reminded me of "Chhalka re" from Saathiya in terms of arrangements. That said, a great tune with some complex variations and instrumentation makes it a lovely song.

7.     DO KA CHAAR (CHAMAN BAHAAR)

Singer : Sonu Nigam

Composer : Anshuman Mukherjee

Lyricist : Apurva Dhar Badgaiyan

Sonu Nigam sings less songs since a few years, but he manages to prove everytime that he still is the finest singer we have today. Special credits to the lyricist here for some simple yet effective lyrics.

8.     TAARE GINN (DIL BECHARA)

Singers : Shreya Ghoshal & Mohit Chauhan

Composer : A.R Rahman

Lyricist : Amitabh Bhattacharya

9. AUR TANHA (LOVE AAJ KAL)

Singer : K.K

Composer : Pritam

Lyricist : Irshad Kamil

10. CHHAPAAK TITLE TRACK  (CHHAPAAK)

Singer : Arijit Singh

Composers : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist : Gulzar

A highly intense track sung extremely well by Arijit Singh, I can picturize Deepika and her agonizing screams everytime I listen to it. Gulzar is in top form.

11. CARE NI KARDA (CHHALAANG)

Singers : Sweetaj Brar & Yo Yo Honey Singh

Composer : Yo Yo Honey Singh

Lyricist : Yo Yo Honey Singh, Alfaaz & Hommie Dilliwala

The rap portions are okayish, but it is Sweetaj Brar's singing which elevates this song to an entirely different level.

12. ISHQ KA ITTAR (BAMFAAD)

Singer & Composer : Vishal Mishra

Lyricist : Raj Shekhar

This film had a criminally underrated album. This song particularly stands out of the rest.

13. JAAN BAN GAYE (KHUDA HAFIZ)

Singers : Vishal Mishra, Asees Kaur & Mithoon

Composer & Lyricist : Mithoon

When it comes to creating soulful melodies, Mithoon aces the department. Well sung by Vishal Mishra & Asees Kaur.

14. KOL KOL (TAISH)

Singer : Jyotica Tangri

Composer : Raghav Sachar

Lyricist : Rohit Sharma

Although this film had a superb album, this song remains my favorite. A song with a lot of thehraav, it entirely relies on the gorgeous tune & the flawless rendition by Jyotica Tangri.

15. BHARAT KI BETI (GUNJAN SAXENA)

Singer : Arijit Singh

Composer : Amit  Trivedi

Lyricist : Kausar Munir

A functional patriotic song, this one has great lyrics and sung well by Arijit Singh. After Raazi's "Ae Watan", this one is the much needed deshbhakti geet on which patriotic dances/performances will take place.

16. RANG BHARIYA (DARBAAN)

Singers : Gulraj Singh, Amrita Singh & Amartya Bobo Rahut

Composer : Amartya Bobo Rahut

Lyricist : Siddhant Kaushal

It is so nice to see the very underrated Gulraj Singh sing songs. Amartya Rahut too deserves more appreciation in the film industry. Amrita Singh's portions are excellent.

17. ZARA KAREEB AA (ATEET)

Singers : Sonu Nigam & Yamini Ghantasala

Composer : Harish Sagane

Lyricist : Shakeel Azmi

Another less heard gem sung extremely well by Sonu Nigam.

18. DIL NE KAHA REPRISE (PANGA)

Singers : Jassie Gill & Asees Kaur

Composers : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist : Javed Akhtar

Out of the 2 versions, I like this one more, due to Jassie Gill's beautiful rendition.

19. DIL TERA TERA (INDOO KI JAWANI)

Singers : Benny Dayal & Neeti Mohan

Composer : Rochak Kohli

Lyricist : Gurpreet Saini & Gautam G Sharma

A song with a very retro Shammi Kapoor feel, I had to initially confirm whether this is an original song or a remake. Do listen to this nostalgic song sung very well by Benny Dayal & Neeti Mohan.

20. LABB PAR AAYE (BANDISH BANDITS)

Singer : Javed Ali

Composers : Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist : Sameer Samant

21. TINAK TINAK (TANHAJI THE UNSUNG WARRIOR)

Singer : Harshdeep Kaur

Composers : Sachet - Parampara

Lyricist : Anil Verma

Probably the least heard song of the album, I had a tough choice to make between this one and the highly addictive "Ghamand Kar". This song stands out for its serene arrangements and soulful singing by Harshdeep Kaur.

22. EK TUKDA DHOOP (THAPPAD)

Singer : Raghav Chaitanya

Composer : Anurag Saikia

Lyricist : Shakeel Azmi

23. HUMNAWAA (99 SONGS)

Singers : Armaan Malik & Shashaa Tirupati

Composer : A.R Rahman

Lyricist : Dilshad Shabbir Shaikh & Abhay Jodhpurkar

One of Rahman's most complex melodies ever, Armaan Malik gives his career best performance here. It is a hell of a difficult song to sing with all its variations, and Armaan does full justice.

24. AJJ MERA YAAR (BHANGRA PAA LE)

Singer : Amit Mishra

Composers : Shubham Shirule & Ana Rehman for JAM8

Lyricist : Shloke Lal

Just when you begin to think that the bhangra genre has been exhausted, you have a highly fresh tune with an addictive loop. High on energy, percussions and melody, this is an earworm. JAM8 under Pritam's creative supervision seems to be doing great.

25. AZAADI KE LIYE (THE FORGOTTEN ARMY)

Singers : Tushar Joshi & Arijit Singh

Composer : Pritam

Lyricist : Kausar Munir & Shloke Lal

26. GHUM (AK vs AK)

Singer : Amit Trivedi

Composer : Alokananda Dasgupta

Lyricist : Rajeshwari Dasgupta Ghose

Amit Trivedi, Vishal Dadlani are 2 composers whose voices suit a particular genre of songs very well. This is one such song where Amit's voice fits perfectly. Fabulously composed by Alokananda Dasgupta, especially when she plays with the word "Ghum".

27. KHWAB HAI YA HAQEEQAT (SHUKRANU)

Singers : Abhijeet Bhattacharya & Krishnakali Saha

Composers : Jaydeep - Sanjay

Lyricist : Yash Eshwari

A song which will instantly transport you back to the 90's when Abhijeet ruled, this is an endearing melody very well composed and sung.

28. MAR JAAYEIN HUM (SHIKARA)

Singers : Papon & Shraddha Mishra

Composer : Sandesh Shandilya

Lyricist : Irshad Kamil

Sandesh Shandilya proves why he still is one of the finest composers in Bollywood today. As is his years old style, he keeps the instrumentation to a bare minimum and lets his tune and the singers do the magic.

29. MASKHARI (DIL BECHARA)

Singers : Sunidhi Chauhan & Hriday Gattani

Composer : A.R Rahman

Lyricist : Amitabh Bhattacharya

30. SHAYAD (LOVE AAJ KAL)

Singer : Arijit Singh

Composer : Pritam

Lyricist : Irshad Kamil

 HONORABLE MENTIONS:

1.     HO JA MAST MALANG (MALANG)

2.     MERE PARWARDIGAR (SCOTLAND)

3.     RUBARU (GINNY WEDS SUNNY)

4.     KHUDA HAFIZ TITLE TRACK

5.     KHUSHMIJAAZ (DARBAAN)

6.     GHAMAND KAR (TANHAJI THE UNSUNG WARRIOR)

MY TOP 30 NON FILMY SONGS

According to me, 2020 was a great year for the indipop/non filmy scenario as it saw innumerable composers and singers release  innumerable songs. I think the lockdown led to a lot of creative inspiration for all the singers, composers and lyricists.

Vishal Mishra was one composer who released many songs. Jyotica Tangri was another singer who I thought gave us some beautifully sung songs. And finally we have Amit Trivedi who I guess made the maximum number of songs and that too with so much variety (Songs of faith, dance, trance & love).

Neha Kakkar too gave some good melodious songs. There was a time when I disliked her singing. However one cannot deny that she has a really good voice and she does a wonderful job when she sings soft numbers.

Arijit Singh too sang and composed few non filmy songs, which were great.

Below is a list of my top 30 non filmy hindi songs released during the year 2020.

1.     AB KE SAWAN

Singers : Sachin Sanghvi & Madhubanti Bagchi

Composers : Sachin-Jigar

Lyricist : Bhargav Purohit

Sachin-Jigar hit it out of the park with a fantastic semi classical composition. Madhubanti Bagchi who's haunting singing in "Shayad" mesmerised me, once again shows her classical prowess.

2.     RADHA NE SHYAM 2.0

Singer : Sachin Sanghvi

Composers : Sachin-Jigar

Lyricist : Bhargav Purohit

Although this one is a Garba song, I personally still love the first version more which released 1-2 years back. This one however has more commercial appeal.

3.     MOTI VERANA (SONGS OF FAITH)

Singers : Osman Mir & Amit Trivedi

Composers & Lyricists : Jayashri Trivedi & Amit Trivedi

One of the finest tracks to have been composed by AT, Osman Mir & Trivedi's contrasting voices lend beauty to the song. A song which was composed and written by Amit Trivedi's mother Jayashri Trivedi 33 years ago, this one is pure beauty.

4.     MADHUBALA (SONGS OF LOVE)

Singer & Composer : Amit Trivedi

Lyricist : Ozil Dalal

A slow song with a lot of thehraav, the real winner here is the gorgeous tune. Also, a super lovely video helps make this song a winner. Both the versions are excellent, though I love Amit's version more.

5.     AAJ BHI

Singer & Composer : Vishal Mishra

Lyricists : Vishal Mishra, Kaushal Kishore, Yash Anand

6.     MUSKURAAYEGA INDIA

Singer & Composer : Vishal Mishra

Lyricist : Kaushal Kishore

A time when the lockdown was in its initial stages, this song was a true morale booster for many.

7.     BHEEGI BHEEGI

Singers : Neha Kakkar & Tony Kakkar

Composer : Tony Kakkar

Lyricist : Tony Kakkar & Prince Dubey

A simple tune sung effectively by Neha Kakkar and ably supported by brother Tony Kakkar. A perfect song for a long drive in the rains.

8.     TAARON KE SHEHER

Singers : Neha Kakkar & Jubin Nautiyal

Composer & Lyricist : Jaani

9.     TERI AANKHON MEIN

Singers : Darshan Raval & Neha Kakkar

Composer : Manan Bhardwaj

Lyricist : Kumaar

Another Garba tune sung extremely well by Darshan Raval and supported well by Neha Kakkar.

10. RIHAA

Singer & Composer : Arijit Singh

Lyricists : Shloke Lal & Arijit Singh

Arijit Singh sings as well as composes, and the result is excellent.

11. TUM HO

Singer : Arijit Singh

Composer : Indraadip Dasgupta

Lyricist : Ashish Pandit

Although this song is a part of the film "Babloo Bachelor", the OST doesn’t seem to have this song. Instead, it is available as an individual song on youtube. A seven odd minute ghazalish tune, Arijit is in supreme form here.

12. ZINDA DILI (BHOOMI 2020)

Singer : Arijit Singh

Composers : Salim-Sulaiman

Lyricist : Niranjan Iyengar

Out of the all the songs from Salim-Sulaiman's ambitious project, I seemed to fall in love with the song having the simplest tunes, rather than the ones with complex structures. This one has a beautiful crescendo-like tune.

13. FURSAT HAI AAJ BHI

Singer & Composer : Arjun Kanungo

Lyricist : Mayur Puri

Although I admit Arjun's songs have started sounding similar at times (This time even the word "fursat" is repeated), I loved this one for the sheer quality of his voice. He has a wonderful range and tonal quality. Lovely lyrics too by Mayur Puri.

14. WAADA HAI

Singer & Composer : Arjun Kanungo

Lyricist : Manoj Muntashir

15. KUCH TUM KAHO

Singer : Jyotica Tangri

Composer : Raghav Sachar

Lyricist : Rashmi Virag

16. FAKIRI

Singer : Jyotica Tangri

Composers : Ajay Jaiswal & Arun Dev Yadav

Lyricist : Rashi Maheshwari

One of the best sung songs this year, according to me.

17. SANG RAHIYO

Singers : Jasleen Royal & Ujjwal Kashyap

Composer : Jasleen Royal

Lyricist : Neeraj Rajawat

18. KHAYAAL

Singers : Abhijeet Srivastava & Prateeksha Srivastava

Composer : Abhijeet Srivastava

Lyricist : Shaayra Apoorva

A delightful song sung very nicely by Abhijeet & Prateeksha Srivastava.

19. AAJ MERE SAATH SIRF TUM HO

Singer : Shaan

Composer : Jeet Gannguli

Lyricist : Kunaal Verma

If you were missing those old charming melodious songs, this one is just the right song for you. Shaan sings it extremely well.

20. BAATEIN KARO

Singer, Composer & Lyricist : Vayu

A well composed song with an equally good video. I personally felt someone else could have sung it better.

21. BIN PUCHE AA JAANA

Singer & Composer : Ami Mishra

Lyricist : Kunaal Verma

22. HEER RAANJHA

Singer, Composer & Lyricist : Bhuvan Bam

23. NAYAN

Singers : Dhvani Bhanushali & Jubin Nautiyal

Composers : Manhar Udhas, Lijo George & DJ Chetas

Lyricists : Barkat Virani Befam & Manoj Muntashir

For the uninformed, this is originally a very famous old Gujarati song which is remade pretty decently. Dhvani Bhanushali does a fab job along with Jubin Nautiyal.

24. SAIYYAN

Singer & Lyricist : Palak Muchhal

Composer : Palaash Muchhal

25. SHAYERA

Singer : Babul Supriyo

Composer : Kaushik-Guddu & Akash (JAM8)

Lyricist : Shloke Lal

It feels so nice to hear Babul Supriyo after such a long time. He is top notch here.

26. BAARISH

Singers : Sonu Kakkar & Nikhil D'souza

Composer & Lyricist : Tony Kakkar

The less heard and most underrated of the three Kakkar siblings proves once again why she is better than her brother and sister when it comes to singing.

27. TU YAAD AAYA

Singer : Adnan Sami

Composer : Lo Jill

Lyricist : Kunaal Verma

Had I not read the name of the composer (Lo Jill), I would have easily mistaken this song to have been composed by Sami himself, as it is very much on the lines of his previous indipop albums (Tera Chehra, Meri Yaad, Teri Kasam, etc). however, the catchy beats & Adnan's fantastic vocals make this a lovely track.

28. VEHEM

Singer : Armaan Malik

Composer : Manan Bhardwaj

Lyricist : Rashmi Virag

Pretty much similar to the usual "Malik brothers" pattern, this one has a really nice easy tune which is instantly likeable.

29. MAULA

Singer : Papon

Composer : Goldie Sohel

Lyricist : Goldie Sohel

30. TUM NA HO

Singers : Arjun Kanungo, Prakriti Kakar & M.Ajay Vyas

Composer : M. Ajay Vyas

Lyricist : Kunaal Verma

TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS : MY THOUGHTS

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS. IT IS TO BE READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE. IT IS NOT EXACTLY A REVIEW. IT CONTAINS THOUGHTS ABOUT HOW I LIKED THE MOVIE. IT IS LONG AND CONTAINS QUITE SOME IMAGES. Few facts we learnt from Tanu Weds Manu Returns – 1.      Southhall mein logon ke ghar ke baahar kacchhe sookhte hain. 2.      Tharki logon ki pasandeeda kitaab hain “LOLITA” 3.      “TILANDI” means “VANISHED” 4.      Tanu saves her husband Manu’s number in her phone under the contact name “HUSBAND” 5.      Delhi ka aadha pollution aashiqon ki wajah se hain. 6.      “JHAND” means “DESTROYED” 7.      “PEEPNI” means … “Bachpan mein buddha hota than a neeli aankhon waala, jisse pichkaao toh         aawaaz aati thi PEE PEE” 8.      Pappi ki colony ki do nikkar wali ladkiyon ne use propose ...

BARFI! - MY THOUGHTS (A PICTORIAL RECOLLECTION)

Indian cinema has always had a strong desire to portray disabilities on screen. While 99% of such films are dull and message oriented, there are a few directors who prove that such people don’t always mean gloom. And so we have Anurag Basu taking us in the life of Murphy. For three hours he transports us into a world which is literally a fairy tale. Such is the beauty of the final product that I actually felt like not leaving the cinema hall; staying a little more in Barfi and Jhilmil’s world. Have you ever felt irritated by the beginning credits of a film? The ones which go like – “Special thanks to…”, “Media partners”, “Publicity partners“, and the names of thousand other brands which might have played a miniscule role in the film? But in Barfi, you never realize when all that finished. Reason? “PICTURE SHURUUUU…. HO GAYI PICTURE SHURU….” This was innovation at its cinematic best. Swanand Kirkire’s witty and apt lines in his own voice make us rapt with attent...

MY REVIEW OF MIRZAPUR SEASON 2

I was a late entrant into the "Mirzapur" weries. Even though it arrived 2 years back, I watched it only a couple of months back during the lockdown. I finally gave in to the immense pressure around, and I couldn’t resist seeing what was so great about the show which led it to become the most successful series in India. And hence, I started watching the first episode of season 1. Shuru majboori mein kiye they, par baad mein jo majaa aaya, I can't describe that. I realized that the hype around the show was totally justified. Also, the makers ended season 1 on such a cliffhanger that it was imperative for everyone to wait so eagerly for season 2. PLOT, DIRECTION & WRITING As I started watching season 2,I slowly realized a few things. This season was way different from the previous one. Gone was the rawness and loudness. The amount of violence shown also seemed much less. Things seemed much more mature. My thoughts were only strengthened as I progressed further.  Season 2...
