MY FAVORITE HINDI SONGS OF 2019

Amidst the sudden deluge of trashy and totally unnecessary remakes and recreations, there were some really good original songs this year. Though not extraordinary, this year was pretty good as far as the music is concerned.

While the dependable composers like Pritam and Sachin – Jigar continued churning quality stuff, this year also saw some fresh talent. The best among these were Composer duo Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur (Sachet – Parampara) and composer Vishal Mishra who belted out some really excellent songs.

Here is my list of my favorite 30 songs of 2019, in no particular order –

1. BEKHAYALI (KABIR SINGH)
Music – Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur
Lyrics – Irshad Kamil
Singer – Sachet Tandon

This was undoubtedly my favorite song this year with some brilliant singing by Sachet. The Arijit Singh version couldn’t match upto this one, to be honest.

2. LAILA (NOTEBOOK)
Music – Vishal Mishra
Lyrics – Abhendra Upadhyay, Vishal Mishra
Singer – Dhvani Bhanushali

T-Series is in safe hands, thanks to Dhvani Bhanushali. I simply love her range and voice quality.

3. KALANK TITLE TRACK (KALANK)
Music – Pritam
Lyrics – Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singer – Arijit Singh

4. KHAIRIYAT (CHHICHHORE)
Music – Pritam
Lyrics – Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singer – Arijit Singh

5. APNA TIME AAYEGA (GULLY BOY)
Music – Divine and Dub Sharma
Lyrics – Divine and Ankur Tewari
Singers – Ranveer Singh and Divine

6. TERI MITTI (KESARI)
Music – Arko

Singers – B Praak

7. ISHAQ CHALIYA (PAL PAL DIL KE PAAS)
Music - Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur
Lyrics – Siddharth and Garima
Singers - Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur

A pretty addictive song, in my opinion.

8. VALAM (MADE IN CHINA)
Music – Sachin and Jigar
Lyrics – Priya Saraiya
Singers – Arijit Singh, Priya Saraiya, Sachin – Jigar

After giving a chartbuster song of the same name in a Gujarati film, Sachin – Jigar come up with another tune titled Valam. I have high respect for them and Priya Saraiya for continuing their fabulous work in regional cinema along with Bollywood, and not forgetting their roots. Hats off!

9. HAWAA BANKE (YEH SAALI AASHIQUI)
Music – Hitesh Modak
Lyrics – Tanveer Ghazi
Singer – Armaan Malik

10. AASMAA (SAAND KI AANKH)

Lyrics – Shakeel Azmi
Singer – Armaan Malik, Ayushmann Khurana

12. KAISE HUA (KABIR SINGH)

Although this is an original composition, I think I heard the tune somewhere in the background score of Arjun Reddy.

13. VIJAYI BHAVA (MANIKARNIKA)

Lyrics – Prasoon Joshi
Singer – Shankar Mahadevan

14. NAI LAGDA (NOTEBOOK)

18. PAL PAL DIL KE PAAS TITLE TRACK

BARFI! - MY THOUGHTS (A PICTORIAL RECOLLECTION)

Indian cinema has always had a strong desire to portray disabilities on screen. While 99% of such films are dull and message oriented, there are a few directors who prove that such people don’t always mean gloom. And so we have Anurag Basu taking us in the life of Murphy. For three hours he transports us into a world which is literally a fairy tale. Such is the beauty of the final product that I actually felt like not leaving the cinema hall; staying a little more in Barfi and Jhilmil’s world. Have you ever felt irritated by the beginning credits of a film? The ones which go like – “Special thanks to…”, “Media partners”, “Publicity partners“, and the names of thousand other brands which might have played a miniscule role in the film? But in Barfi, you never realize when all that finished. Reason? “PICTURE SHURUUUU…. HO GAYI PICTURE SHURU….” This was innovation at its cinematic best. Swanand Kirkire’s witty and apt lines in his own voice make us rapt with attent...

MY REVIEW OF MIRZAPUR SEASON 2

I was a late entrant into the "Mirzapur" weries. Even though it arrived 2 years back, I watched it only a couple of months back during the lockdown. I finally gave in to the immense pressure around, and I couldn’t resist seeing what was so great about the show which led it to become the most successful series in India. And hence, I started watching the first episode of season 1. Shuru majboori mein kiye they, par baad mein jo majaa aaya, I can't describe that. I realized that the hype around the show was totally justified. Also, the makers ended season 1 on such a cliffhanger that it was imperative for everyone to wait so eagerly for season 2. PLOT, DIRECTION & WRITING As I started watching season 2,I slowly realized a few things. This season was way different from the previous one. Gone was the rawness and loudness. The amount of violence shown also seemed much less. Things seemed much more mature. My thoughts were only strengthened as I progressed further.  Season 2...
