2023 - Annual Round up (Hindi)

As far as music is concerned, I personally felt 2023 was a pretty solid year. The remake song trend was much less compared to previous years. I initially decided to select around 30 odd songs for this list. However I ended up with 50 songs.

This list also consists of some beautiful songs which hardly anyone heard, owing to various reasons like the film's poor marketing and failure, etc. The aim of this post is to celebrate the best music of 2023, and to also make people aware of the unheard / underrated music of 2023.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR

The usual stalwarts like Arijit Singh and Pritam took a backseat for me as one of the OG's re-emerged in 2023. I am talking about SONU NIGAM. This was his year. The sad part is he sang so many beautiful songs which went totally unnoticed. I have included many of them in this list too.

1.                     Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se (Dunki)

(Sonu Nigam, Javed Akhtar, Pritam)

No one but Sonu could have sung this song. Probably the finest sequences in an otherwise mediocre movie, Sonu resembles Rafi in the best way possible.

2.                     ANIMAL (Full album)

It is difficult to actually pick 1 song from an album which boasted of so many different genres of music. While "Hua Main" was addictive right from its beginning hook, "Satranga" saw Arijit Singh at his melodious best.

Sonu Nigam's haunting vocals in "Papa Meri Jaan" induce goosebumps. So do B.Praak's vocals in "Saari Duniya Jala Denge".

Vishal Mishra proves why he is one of the most dependable singer-composer, with "Pehle bhi Main", while Shreya Ghoshal proves why she is the next best thing after Lata Mangeshkar in the music industry. "Kashmir" sees her going totally unpugged, and what a song she delivers!

3.                     Bolo na (12th Fail)

(Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Medha Shankar, Swanand Kirkire, Shantanu Moitra)

Both the versions by Shreya Ghoshal as well as the lead actress Medha Shankar are equally beautiful. Moitra never goes wrong, especially when he teams up with Shreya Ghoshal.

4.                     Tum kya mile (Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani)

(Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Pritam)

5.                     Chal tere ishq mein (Gadar 2)

(Neeti Mohan, Vishal Mishra & various, Sayeed Quadri, Mithoon)

My personal favorite Neeti Mohan song in the last few years. This song reminded me of the OST of "Shamshera", an album which never got its due.

6.                     Oonchi oonchi deewarein (Yaariyan 2)

(Arijit Singh, Manan Bhardwaj)

Would it be wrong to say that this was the only good thing about this film? Special mention to Manan Bhardwaj for lovely lyrics.

7.                     Aaj ke baad (Satyaprem ki Katha)

(Manan Bhardwaj, Tulsi Kumar, Himani Kapoor)

Manan Bhardwaj, again! Way to go!

8.                     Bandeya (Sirf ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai)

(Sonu Nigam, Garima Obrah, Siddharth & Sangeet Haldipur, Roy)

9.                     Tu hai sheetal dhara (Adipurush)

(Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, Manoj Muntashir, Ajay-Atul)

A lovely song which got less due.

10.               Intezar tha (Tiku Weds Sheru)

(Monali Thakur, Gaurav Chatterji, Sai Kabir)

Such a good album which went unnoticed!

11.               Plum Pudding (The Archies)

(Ankur Tewari, Shibani Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Reminded me of those christmas carols our music teacher taught us in school!

12.               Vo tere mere ishq ka (Jubilee)

(Sunidhi Chauhan, Kausar Munir, Amit Trivedi)

Easily Amit Trivedi's best OST in the last few years. So good to see Sunidhi singing more.

13.               Main parwana (Pippa)

(Arijit Singh, Shellee, A.R Rahman)

What a stunner by Rahman! And what a rendition by Arijit Singh! This song is a tight slap on the faces of everyone who constantly keep cribbing about how repetitive Arijit has started sounding.

14.               Dono title track (Dono)

(Armaan Malik, Irshad Kamil, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

15.               Dil se dil tak (Bawaal)

(Laqshay Kapoor, Akashdeep Sengupta, Suvarna Tiwari, Kausar Munir, Akashdeep Sengupta)

16.               Taqdeer se takra (Ghoomer)

(Mika Singh, Swanand Kirkire, Amit Trivedi)

Whenever Mika sings something else than his usual garbage, he is wonderful. Paaji, sing more of these!

17.               Phir aur kya chahiye (Zara Hatke Zara Bachke)

(Arijit Singh, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Sachin-Jigar)

Trust Sachin-Jigar to come up with one of the most melodious tunes in recent times.

18.               Dilkash (Gulmohar)

(Talat Aziz, Shellee, Siddhartha Khosla)

19.               Woh tara (Dhak Dhak)

(Shannon Donald, Shashaa Tirupati, Raghav & Arjun)

A decently good soundtrack, this song stood out amongst the rest.

20.               Kudmayi (Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani)

(Shahid Mallya, Sachet Tandon, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Pritam)

Dear brides – to – be, you have a new song for your wedding entry and dance performances.

21.               Nindiya (The Railway Men)

(Supriyaa Pathak, Atharv Bakshi, Ayushmann Khurrana, Kausar Munir, Sanchit – Ankit )

Special mention to the version sung by Ayushmann Khurana.

22.               Na hosh chale (Khufiya)

(Vishal Bhardwaj, Arijit Singh, Gulzar)

Dear Vishal Bhardwaj, please sing more. Period.

23.               Itni si Baat (Sam Bahadur)

(Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, Gulzar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

24.               Sunoh (The Archies)

(Tejas, Shivam Mahadevan, Aditi "Dot" Sehgal, Javed Akhtar, Ankur Tewari, The Islanders)

25.               Kho Gaye hum Kahaan title song

(Achint Thakkar, Javed Akhtar)

26.               Raangla (Dono)

(Pratibha Singh Baghel, Shankar Mahadevan, Irshad Kamil, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Whattay beautiful song! Pratibha Singh sounds so amazing, as always.

27.               Pukaaroon hari om (The Great Indian Family)

(Sonu Nigam, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Pritam)

28.               Aararaari raaro (Jawan)

(Deepthi Suresh, Irshad Kamil, Anirudh)

29.               Tumse milke (Tiku Weds Sheru)

(Mohit Chauhan, Sai Kabir, Gaurav Chatterji)

A good Mohit Chauhan song after a long time.

30.               Jazbaat (Pippa)

(Jubin Nautiyal, Shilpa Rao, Shellee, A.R Rahman)

31.               Yentamma (Kisi ka Bhai Kisi ki Jaan)

(Vishal Dadlani, Payal Dev, Raftaar, Shabbir Ahmed)

Guilty pleasure!

32.               Allah de bande (Gumraah)

Trademark Mithoon!

(Vishal Bhardwaj, Kiran Nivi, Sunidhi Chauhan, Gulzar)

37.               Shehzada title track (Shehzada)

BARFI! - MY THOUGHTS (A PICTORIAL RECOLLECTION)

Indian cinema has always had a strong desire to portray disabilities on screen. While 99% of such films are dull and message oriented, there are a few directors who prove that such people don’t always mean gloom. And so we have Anurag Basu taking us in the life of Murphy. For three hours he transports us into a world which is literally a fairy tale. Such is the beauty of the final product that I actually felt like not leaving the cinema hall; staying a little more in Barfi and Jhilmil’s world. Have you ever felt irritated by the beginning credits of a film? The ones which go like – “Special thanks to…”, “Media partners”, “Publicity partners“, and the names of thousand other brands which might have played a miniscule role in the film? But in Barfi, you never realize when all that finished. Reason? “PICTURE SHURUUUU…. HO GAYI PICTURE SHURU….” This was innovation at its cinematic best. Swanand Kirkire’s witty and apt lines in his own voice make us rapt with attent...

MY REVIEW OF MIRZAPUR SEASON 2

I was a late entrant into the "Mirzapur" weries. Even though it arrived 2 years back, I watched it only a couple of months back during the lockdown. I finally gave in to the immense pressure around, and I couldn’t resist seeing what was so great about the show which led it to become the most successful series in India. And hence, I started watching the first episode of season 1. Shuru majboori mein kiye they, par baad mein jo majaa aaya, I can't describe that. I realized that the hype around the show was totally justified. Also, the makers ended season 1 on such a cliffhanger that it was imperative for everyone to wait so eagerly for season 2. PLOT, DIRECTION & WRITING As I started watching season 2,I slowly realized a few things. This season was way different from the previous one. Gone was the rawness and loudness. The amount of violence shown also seemed much less. Things seemed much more mature. My thoughts were only strengthened as I progressed further.  Season 2...
